Norway is preparing to welcome the largest battery-powered ferry ever built for its waters. The vessel, Hinnøy, constructed by Turkish shipyard Cemre for operator Torghatten Nord, departed Yalova, Turkey, on April 15 following final testing and certification. It is set to replace LNG-powered ferries operating on the Bognes–Lødingen route and marks a major milestone in sustainable Arctic marine transport.
With a gross tonnage of 7,115 and a length of 117 meters, the vessel was designed by Norwegian Ship Design. It will operate at a record speed of 14 knots, with advanced dual power systems ensuring consistent performance even in rough weather conditions. Propulsion is provided by two 1.8 kW Schottel thrusters, supported by a 4,750 kWh water-cooled Siemens battery system.
The ferry can carry up to 399 passengers and 120 vehicles. It features one of the world’s most powerful shore charging systems, rated at 9,200 kW, for fast battery recharging. In case shore power is unavailable, onboard biodiesel generators will maintain full vessel functionality.
Classed by DNV and registered in Norway, the vessel’s enclosed design is specially adapted for longer routes and challenging Arctic conditions — unlike earlier, more open battery ferry designs meant for shorter distances.
Hinnøy represents a significant step toward achieving Norway’s environmental goals in the maritime sector. Looking ahead, Torghatten Nord plans to expand its eco-fleet with two hydrogen-powered ferries to be built by Myklebust Verft. These vessels, also 117 meters long and designed to carry 120 vehicles, will operate on Norway’s longest ferry route, between Bodø and the Lofoten Islands. Delivery is expected in 2026.
