Emergency services in Neuss, western Germany, responded on the morning of March 24 after reports that an inland cargo vessel had become stuck under a bridge on the Rhine River.

Upon arrival, responders confirmed that the vessel was trapped beneath the bridge span after several containers shifted, with some falling overboard. The vessel, which was transporting containers and several vehicles, had collided with a railway bridge while navigating the river.

Fire services reported that two containers were found in the water, with several others remaining unstable onboard. No injuries were reported, but both river traffic and rail operations across the bridge were temporarily suspended during the response.

A crane barge was deployed from Düsseldorf to assist in the recovery. Authorities determined that the safest way to free the vessel was to lift the movable section of the bridge. However, during the lifting process, two additional containers fell into the river. Fire officials described this as a controlled part of the operation.

The crane vessel was then used to retrieve the containers from the water, which were later confirmed to be empty.

Although the incident resulted in no casualties or environmental damage, it highlights the importance of proper cargo securing and navigation safety when transiting confined inland waterways.
