Whale Collides with Fire Rescue Boat in Raritan Bay
An unusual maritime accident occurred off the coast of New Jersey, USA, when Marine Unit 2, a fire rescue vessel operated by the Carteret Fire Department, sustained critical damage after colliding with a whale and later sank in Raritan Bay.
The incident took place on July 4 while the crew was returning from a marine patrol supporting Independence Day celebrations in New York Harbor. The vessel was reportedly traveling at approximately 7–8 knots when a large whale, believed to be a humpback whale, suddenly surfaced beneath the stern, causing severe damage to the hull.
Water Flooded the Vessel Within Minutes
According to the boat’s captain, the crew heard a loud impact before discovering water rapidly flooding the engine compartment through a large breach in the hull.
The firefighters immediately issued a distress call, put on their life jackets, and abandoned the vessel. Within minutes, the rescue boat was almost completely submerged.
Crew Rescued by Nearby Boaters
Nearby recreational boaters and a personal watercraft operator were the first to respond, helping rescue the crew from the water. Marine units from the neighboring Perth Amboy Fire Department also assisted in the operation.
All crew members were rescued safely, and no injuries were reported. Officials credited the successful outcome to the crew’s emergency training and the fact that everyone was wearing life jackets.
A Very Rare Maritime Incident
Marine experts describe whale collisions causing the loss of a vessel as extremely uncommon. Witnesses reported seeing several whales in the area before the accident, suggesting the animal accidentally surfaced beneath the boat rather than intentionally striking it.
Although the fire rescue vessel was declared a total loss, the incident ended without casualties. Authorities continue to investigate the accident, while videos and photographs of the unusual event have quickly spread across international media and social networks.
