Damen launches latest Island Class ferry for BC Ferries
On August 27, Damen Shipyards Galati (Romania) launched a new Island Class ferry built for Canadian operator BC Ferries. This is the second of four ferries currently under construction. Once delivered, they will serve coastal routes in British Columbia, providing low-emission transport services.
In total, Damen will deliver ten Island Class ferries, with this vessel becoming the eighth built for BC Ferries. The design is based on the Damen 8117 (E3) electric ferry platform.
Eco-friendly technologies
The ferries are equipped with hybrid diesel-electric propulsion systems, with the potential to transition to full battery-electric operation once shore-based charging infrastructure is in place.
In addition, the new generation of ferries has been designed with underwater noise reduction in mind — a critical measure to protect marine ecosystems and endangered species such as the southern resident killer whale.
To achieve this, Damen and BC Ferries conducted a series of underwater noise measurements on existing Island Class ferries. The findings were used to improve the next generation through:
-
optimized hull form using CFD simulations and towing tank tests,
-
a new, quieter, and more efficient propeller blade design.
Project outlook
The new ferries will operate on the Nanaimo–Gabriola Island and Campbell River–Quadra Island routes. Damen is also supplying shore charging stations and will continue to provide operational support for the ferries through its service hub in British Columbia.
“In recent months, the Island Class project has made significant progress. We are very pleased with our cooperation with BC Ferries, which plays a key role in the success of this program,” said Leo Postma, Damen’s Group Sales Director.
