The Greek-flagged Ro-Ro passenger ferry Kissamos ran aground off the coast of Milos in the early hours of June 27 after experiencing a temporary power failure during a scheduled voyage. No injuries or environmental pollution were reported.
The ferry was operating its regular service from Piraeus to Chania with 1,246 passengers and 108 crew members on board when a technical malfunction caused a temporary blackout. Without propulsion, the vessel drifted into shallow waters near the Port of Milos before eventually running aground.
The Hellenic Coast Guard immediately deployed response teams to the scene. A diver carried out an underwater inspection of the hull and confirmed that the vessel had sustained no structural damage. After the crew successfully restored electrical power, Kissamos was able to refloat under its own power and safely return to the Port of Milos.
Upon arrival, port authorities detained the ferry pending a seaworthiness inspection and an investigation into the cause of the power outage that led to the incident.
Built in 1992, Kissamos is a Greek-flagged Ro-Ro passenger ferry measuring 192 meters in length and 27 meters in beam. The vessel operates regular passenger and vehicle services between mainland Greece and the island of Crete.
