IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has called for increased diplomatic efforts following a new wave of attacks on merchant vessels in the Red Sea.
Speaking at the IMO Council meeting in London, Dominguez expressed concern over the recent attacks on the Magic Seas and Eternity C on July 6 and 7. The attack on the Eternity C resulted in at least three fatalities and several injuries among crew members, while all 22 seafarers aboard the Magic Seas were safely rescued.
“After several months of relative calm, the resumption of such blatant attacks represents a violation of international law and freedom of navigation,” Dominguez stated. He emphasized that the main victims of these attacks and the resulting pollution are innocent seafarers and local communities.
The IMO Secretary-General reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to engaging with all parties that can help reduce these threats, stressing that “the only way to resolve these geopolitical conflicts affecting the shipping sector is through constructive dialogue..
Several IMO Member States expressed solidarity with those affected by the attacks, while IMO Council Chair Victor Jimenez (Spain) condemned the attacks and supported the Secretary-General’s call for diplomatic efforts.
According to IMO data confirmed by flag States, at least 69 attacks on international vessels were recorded in the region between November 2023 and October 2024, linked to broader geopolitical tensions. This week’s incidents are the first reported since October last year.
The IMO Council will continue its 134th session this week, addressing the organization’s budget, strategic plan, and other administrative matters, including maritime security in the Red Sea.
