The Port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest seaport, was shaken by a fatal explosion at a petroleum storage facility operated by Gunvor Energy.
The incident occurred during maintenance work on one of the company’s fuel storage tanks. According to local authorities, one worker was killed and six others were injured. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, and the affected area was secured while firefighters and rescue teams carried out operations.
Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway. At this stage, there is no evidence suggesting sabotage or any criminal activity, although investigators are examining all possible causes of the explosion.
The Port of Rotterdam remains fully operational. Officials reported that nearby terminals and refineries, including facilities operated by Shell, BP and ExxonMobil, were not directly affected by the incident. A temporary power outage was recorded elsewhere in the port on the same day, but authorities stated that it was unrelated to the explosion.
As Europe’s largest port and one of the world’s most important energy hubs, Rotterdam plays a critical role in the import, storage and distribution of crude oil, petroleum products and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The incident has once again highlighted the importance of strict safety procedures during maintenance operations at industrial energy facilities.
The investigation continues, and officials are expected to release additional information once the cause of the explosion has been determined.
