On November 5, the cargo vessel Shetland Trader, registered under the Liberian flag, collided with several moored yachts on the River Medina near the Isle of Wight (United Kingdom) after experiencing an engine failure.
The incident occurred while the 75-meter vessel was en route from Terneuzen (Netherlands) to Cowes (UK). After losing propulsion, the crew attempted to minimize the impact by dropping anchor, but the ship continued to drift forward into a mooring area designated for private and leisure craft.
The Shetland Trader struck a large yacht, causing its mast to break. Local yacht owners quickly assisted in detaching the damaged vessel from the cargo ship and securing it to a pontoon.
The crew later restored engine power, raised the anchor, and safely berthed the ship at the port of Cowes.
The Cowes Harbour Commission confirmed that no injuries were reported, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident.
