On February 13, the cargo vessel Deniz Akay, sailing under the flag of Barbados, suffered an engine failure while departing De Franceschi Pier in the Port of Rijeka, Croatia, resulting in a collision with a moored yacht.
The incident occurred at approximately 20:30 local time. The vessel struck Galeb, the former state yacht of Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito, which is currently being converted into a museum ship.
Emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene, and representatives of the Rijeka port authority carried out a preliminary investigation. Alcohol tests conducted on the cargo vessel’s crew returned negative results.
Initial inspections revealed only minor damage — to the port side of Deniz Akay and the port bow section of Galeb. No injuries or environmental pollution were reported.
After the completion of inspections and necessary procedures, the Port of Rijeka authorities authorized the vessel to continue its voyage on February 16. Deniz Akay is expected to arrive at the port of Karasu, Turkey, on February 17.
