The new cable laying vessel OCEANUS 1, built in Vietnam for ATE Energy International, arrived in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on 16 September. It is designed to support subsea cable installation and offshore energy projects in the Taiwan Strait and beyond.
Built by Pacific Shipbuilding Joint Stock Company, OCEANUS 1 was designed for operating conditions in the Taiwan Strait. The vessel has DPS-2 dynamic positioning capability, allowing it to maintain its position during cable operations.
Its 30-metre-diameter cable carousel can hold up to 8,000 tonnes of cable. Other equipment includes a 250-tonne hydraulic A-frame, a 40-tonne service crane, a jet plough for burying cables and an SMD Quasar III work-class remotely operated vehicle.
The modular work deck can be configured for cable transport, laying, trenching, cable protection, jointing and subsea surveys. This allows OCEANUS 1 to support offshore wind farms, subsea power transmission and other marine infrastructure projects. The vessel has accommodation for up to 77 crew members and project personnel.
Synergy Marine Group provides technical and crew management. ATE Energy’s Submarine Cables Department will oversee the vessel’s deployment and cable laying activities. Mermaid Subsea Services (Thailand) is expected to support the management of specific cable projects, subject to the award and finalisation of the relevant contracts.
