Damen Shipyards Group has unveiled the new CFe 1100 container feeder design for regional and international services. The vessel has been developed with a strong focus on fuel efficiency, cargo flexibility and future conversion to alternative energy sources.
The 150-metre-long and 24.5-metre-wide vessel will have a capacity of 1,139 TEU, including more than 800 TEU with containers uniformly loaded at 14 tonnes. Its cargo arrangement will accommodate 20-, 30-, 40- and 45-foot containers, together with 174 reefer connections.
The CFe 1100 builds on Damen’s experience with the smaller CFe 800 and its Combi Freighter series. An optimised hull form is intended to reduce resistance, fuel consumption and emissions.
A hybrid PTO/PTI system will be included as standard. In PTO mode, the main engine will generate electricity for onboard equipment and refrigerated containers, reducing the need to operate auxiliary generator sets.
The PTI function will supply additional electrical power to the propulsion system. This electric boost will improve manoeuvrability and provide extra speed when required. The vessel will have an economical speed of 15 knots, a maximum speed of 17 knots and a boosted speed of up to 18 knots.
The container feeder will be prepared for future conversion to methanol fuel. Space for the necessary equipment will be reserved in the engine room, while the aft cargo hold arrangement will allow a methanol tank to be installed later. The methanol-ready configuration will be verified by DNV.
The design will also include provisions for a battery energy storage system, scrubber installation and additional energy-saving equipment. A shore power connection will allow onboard generators to be switched off, reducing emissions while the vessel is in port.
CFe 1100 will have Ice Class 1A, expanding the range of routes on which it can operate. Damen says the combination of a flexible cargo arrangement, hybrid technology and methanol readiness will allow shipowners to adapt the vessel to future environmental requirements.
