CMES Takes Delivery of the World’s First Methanol-Fueled PCTC with Capacity for 9,300 Cars

On September 17, 2025China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) officially took delivery of the world’s first dual-fuel methanol Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) with a capacity of 9,300 vehicles. The vessel, named CM Hong Kong, was built by China Merchants Industry.

Specifications of CM Hong Kong

  • 📐 Beam — 37.7 m

  • 🛳 13 cargo decks

  • 🚗 Capacity — 9,300 vehicles

  • ⚡ Cargo types: passenger cars, trucks, buses, heavy machinery, and next-generation vehicles powered by hydrogen and natural gas

Energy system

The vessel features a fully integrated methanol-based energy ecosystem including:

  • a dual-fuel main engine,

  • auxiliary engines,

  • a boiler,

  • and power units.

This allows seamless switching between fuel types. The vessel meets IMO Tier III emission standards and, when running on methanol, can cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70% compared to conventional marine fuels.

Fleet expansion and outlook

CM Hong Kong is the first in a series of six dual-fuel methanol PCTCs ordered by CMES. The delivery strengthens the company’s ro-ro fleet and reinforces its position in the global PCTC market while advancing the shift toward greener shipping.
