Dutch company Wattlab has installed an innovative solar power system on the inland cargo vessel Blue Marlin operated by HGK Shipping, turning it into the world’s first inland vessel capable of hybrid sailing using solar energy.
The vessel is equipped with 192 solar panels, supplying power to both onboard systems and the propulsion system. The system can generate up to 35 kW under optimal conditions and operates in tandem with four diesel generators that power the electric propulsion system. By integrating solar energy with battery storage, the vessel can smooth out peak loads, avoiding the need to activate an additional generator during periods of high demand and reducing fuel consumption.
HGK Shipping, with a fleet of 350 vessels and an annual transport volume of around 43 million tonnes, is one of the leading players in European dry bulk, gas, and chemical transportation. Wattlab, with its expertise in maritime operations, is supporting HGK Shipping in transitioning to more sustainable and efficient solutions, showcasing how solar energy can be effectively used in inland shipping.
