If you want to start working as a Stewardess on a yacht, you do not need to collect every certificate available in the yachting industry.
The most important thing is to prepare the correct basic package of maritime certificates and documents that yacht owners, management companies and crewing agencies actually expect from candidates.
For most entry-level Stewardess positions, the main requirements are STCW Basic Safety Training, a valid medical certificate, Security Awareness, Food Hygiene, together with your personal and seafarer documents.
Let’s go through them one by one.
Passport
The first document you need is a valid international passport.
Yachts regularly move between different countries and regions, so your passport should have sufficient validity remaining for employment, travel, visa applications and crew formalities.
It is always better to start looking for work with plenty of validity left on your passport rather than only a few months.
Seaman’s Book / Seafarer’s Record Book
A yacht crew member should also have a Seaman’s Book or Seafarer’s Record Book.
This document can be used to confirm your status as a seafarer, record your sea service and support crew formalities when joining or leaving a vessel.
Some private yachts may not request a Seaman’s Book from a first-time Stewardess, but if you are planning to build a professional career at sea, it is better to arrange it in advance.
ENG1 Medical Certificate
One of the most important documents for yacht crew is the ENG1 Medical Certificate, or an accepted equivalent seafarer medical certificate.
ENG1 confirms that you are medically fit to work at sea.
During the examination, the doctor checks your general health as well as factors such as:
eyesight;
colour vision;
hearing;
blood pressure;
general physical condition;
medical conditions that could affect safe work onboard.
ENG1 certificates are issued by doctors approved by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency — MCA.
You will frequently see yacht vacancies stating:
Valid ENG1 required
For many commercial yachts, you will not be able to join without a valid seafarer medical certificate.
STCW Basic Safety Training
The main training package for a professional yacht Stewardess is STCW Basic Safety Training.
This is the foundation of maritime safety training and covers the essential skills every crew member must understand before working onboard.
The basic package normally includes the following modules.
Personal Survival Techniques
This course teaches you how to survive an emergency at sea.
Training normally covers:
use of lifejackets;
use of liferafts;
abandon-ship procedures;
entering the water safely;
survival techniques in the water;
basic actions while waiting for rescue.
Even though a Stewardess works primarily in the interior department, she is still a member of the vessel’s emergency organisation.
In a real emergency, every crew member has assigned responsibilities.
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
Every yacht crew member must know how to react to a fire onboard.
This course covers:
types of fire;
fire prevention;
use of fire extinguishers;
firefighting equipment;
emergency procedures;
basic firefighting techniques;
working in smoke-filled environments.
A fire onboard a yacht can develop very quickly, which is why firefighting training is one of the most important elements of STCW.
Elementary First Aid
This course provides basic medical emergency training.
You learn how to respond to:
cuts and bleeding;
burns;
fractures;
unconsciousness;
breathing problems;
other common medical emergencies onboard.
You are not expected to become a medical professional, but every crew member should know how to provide immediate assistance until more qualified help is available.
Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities — PSSR
PSSR teaches crew members about safe working practices, responsibilities onboard, teamwork and professional behaviour at sea.
From 1 January 2026, updated STCW requirements also include training on the prevention of and response to violence and harassment at sea.
This includes topics such as:
bullying;
harassment;
sexual harassment;
sexual assault;
appropriate behaviour onboard;
reporting and responding to inappropriate conduct.
For candidates completing a new PSSR course under the updated standards, this training should now form part of the programme.
If your PSSR certificate was issued earlier, you may need to check whether additional training or an update is required by your flag state, employer or certification authority.
Security Awareness
Another important certificate for yacht crew is Security Awareness.
This course teaches basic ship security procedures.
Topics normally include:
recognising potential security threats;
understanding restricted areas onboard;
access control;
identifying suspicious behaviour;
reporting security concerns;
understanding your responsibilities under the vessel’s security procedures.
For a standard Stewardess position, Security Awareness is usually sufficient.
If you are given specific security responsibilities onboard, you may instead require a qualification such as Designated Security Duties.
Food Hygiene Level 2
For a Stewardess, Food Hygiene Level 2 is one of the most useful certificates to have.
Interior crew frequently work with food, drinks, guest service and galley-related operations.
A Stewardess may:
serve food;
prepare drinks;
assist the Chef;
handle snacks;
store food;
prepare guest areas;
work with refrigerators and food storage spaces.
Food Hygiene training normally covers:
safe food handling;
correct storage;
temperature control;
personal hygiene;
prevention of cross-contamination;
cleaning procedures;
food safety standards.
On some yachts this certificate is mandatory, while on others it is simply preferred.
For an entry-level Stewardess, however, Food Hygiene Level 2 is definitely one of the certificates worth obtaining.
Crowd Management
On larger yachts, another certificate that may be required is Crowd Management.
This is particularly relevant to large commercial yachts, passenger yachts and vessels carrying larger numbers of guests.
The course teaches crew members how to:
control passenger movement during an emergency;
direct people to muster stations;
assist with evacuation;
communicate clearly with passengers;
prevent panic;
manage groups of people during an emergency situation.
For a small private yacht, Crowd Management is usually not required.
However, on larger commercial yachts and passenger-certified vessels, it may become mandatory depending on the yacht’s certification, flag and your assigned emergency duties.
What Documents and Certificates Does a Stewardess Need?
If we simplify everything, a good basic package for a yacht Stewardess looks like this:
Valid Passport
Seaman’s Book / Seafarer’s Record Book
ENG1 or another accepted seafarer medical certificate
STCW Basic Safety Training
PSSR compliant with the current harassment and bullying training requirements
Security Awareness
Food Hygiene Level 2
And on some larger yachts:
Crowd Management
This is already a strong foundation for starting your job search.
Do You Need Additional Yacht Courses?
Many new candidates spend a lot of money on extra courses before they have even started applying for jobs.
In most cases, this is unnecessary.
Additional training can certainly improve your CV. Examples include:
Silver Service;
Barista Training;
Cocktail and Bartender Training;
Wine Courses;
Housekeeping Training;
Laundry Training;
Powerboat Level 2;
advanced medical training.
But these courses do not replace your basic maritime certificates.
For a first job, employers are usually much more interested in whether you have:
valid STCW;
valid medical certification;
the correct maritime documents;
good English;
a professional Yacht CV;
availability to join quickly;
the correct visa or working rights.
Additional training should be selected according to the type of yacht and the positions you are targeting.
B1/B2 Visa
A valid US B1/B2 visa can significantly increase your chances of finding yacht work.
Many yachts operate between the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Bahamas and the United States.
Vacancies frequently include requirements such as:
B1/B2 required
or
B1/B2 preferred
If a yacht is heading to the United States and you already have the required visa, you are much easier for the employer to hire than a candidate who cannot travel with the vessel.
For this reason, B1/B2 can be a major advantage for yacht Stewardess candidates.
Schengen Visa
If your nationality requires a visa to enter the Schengen Area, having a valid Schengen Visa can also significantly increase your opportunities.
A large part of the European yacht season takes place in:
France;
Italy;
Spain;
Greece;
Croatia;
Monaco;
other Mediterranean destinations.
Many yacht vacancies are urgent and require candidates who can travel immediately.
You will often see phrases such as:
ASAP start
Must be in Europe
Immediate joining
Candidates already in the Mediterranean preferred
Being able to travel to the yacht without waiting for a new visa can give you a serious advantage.
UK Working Rights and UK FWP
Some yacht vacancies also require UK Working Rights.
You may see references to UK FWP — Frontier Worker Permit.
If you already hold a valid Frontier Worker Permit or another legal right to work in the UK, this can give you access to additional yacht positions operating in British waters.
However, UK FWP is not something that every foreign candidate can simply apply for.
It applies only to people who meet specific eligibility requirements.
Therefore, when applying for jobs, only state UK Working Rights or UK FWP if you genuinely hold the relevant status.
Certificates Are Only Part of the Job Search
Having every required document does not automatically guarantee your first yacht job.
Employers also look at:
your English level;
your Yacht CV;
professional appearance;
hospitality experience;
restaurant or hotel experience;
references;
current location;
availability;
visa status;
attitude and communication skills.
For a first-time Stewardess, previous experience in hotels, restaurants, luxury hospitality, housekeeping, bartending or customer service can be extremely valuable.
What Should You Get First?
If you are starting from zero, concentrate on the essentials first.
A practical order would be:
Passport
Seaman’s Book
ENG1 medical
STCW Basic Safety
Updated PSSR
Security Awareness
Food Hygiene Level 2
Then look at the type of yacht jobs you want.
For larger vessels, you may need Crowd Management.
For US-based yachts, B1/B2 becomes extremely valuable.
For Mediterranean jobs, make sure you have the necessary Schengen access.
For UK projects, check whether you have valid UK Working Rights.
There is no reason to spend thousands on courses that employers are not asking for.
Build the correct foundation first and then add qualifications according to the vacancies you actually want.
