Maersk Commissions Its Largest Dual-Fuel Containership, Berlin Mærsk
On June 18, a naming ceremony was held at the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, for Berlin Mærsk — the first in a new series of six next-generation dual-fuel methanol-powered container vessels with a capacity of 17,480 TEU.
Berlin Mærsk is the 14th dual-fuel vessel to join the Maersk fleet. Its design is based on the earlier Ane Mærsk class, but with a wider beam that allows for increased cargo capacity. This makes Berlin Mærsk the largest methanol-powered vessel in the company’s fleet to date.
The ship is scheduled to make its maiden port call in Shanghai on July 7, where it will begin operating on Maersk’s AE3 service connecting East Asia with Northern Europe. All six vessels in the series are being built by HHI and are scheduled for delivery in 2025. They will sail under the Danish flag.
