Explosion Hits Rescue Vessel Condor in the North Sea

Explosion Hits Rescue Vessel Condor in the North Sea
today at 13:13 19

An explosion occurred aboard the 15-metre rescue vessel Condor in the North Sea off the coast of Ter Heijde, the Netherlands, during the night of October 6.

There were nine people on board when the explosion occurred in the engine room, causing a fire. The crew later managed to extinguish the blaze themselves.

Following the incident, Condor alerted KNRM — the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution, which dispatched two rescue vessels to assist.

The 10-metre George Dijkstra and the 18-metre Kitty Roosmale Nepveu were sent to the scene.

George Dijkstra transferred seven of the nine people from Condor and headed to Scheveningen.

Kitty Roosmale Nepveu remained with the damaged vessel and escorted Condor back toward port.

Despite the explosion, Condor was able to return to Scheveningen under its own power using one engine.

After the vessel arrived, local firefighters inspected it and confirmed that the crew had successfully extinguished the fire.

No injuries were reported.
