A major fire erupted on the car carrier Morning Midas off the coast of Alaska. The vessel, operated by Zodiac Maritime, was transporting around 3,000 vehicles, including 800 electric cars. The fire reportedly started on a deck where EVs were stored.
The crew of 22 was unable to contain the blaze and was evacuated to a nearby passing ship. At the time of the incident, Morning Midas, sailing under the Liberian flag, was en route from China to Mexico. The vessel is currently adrift, and U.S. Coast Guard units have been dispatched to the scene.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of transporting electric vehicles by sea — particularly due to the fire hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries, which are difficult to extinguish once ignited.
