Zelim has announced that its AI-powered man overboard detection system ZOE has received ISO 21195:2020 certification from Lloyd’s Register following successful trials.
The system was tested onboard the cruise vessel Ambition during a 90-day continuous sea trial, including harsh winter conditions. This marks the first time ISO testing has been conducted on a cruise ship.
During the trials, ZOE achieved a 97% detection rate in simulated man overboard scenarios, exceeding the minimum ISO requirements.
⚠️ Key features
-
Certified under international ISO 21195 standard
-
24/7 full-surveillance capability
-
Uses computer vision and advanced video analytics
-
Trained on over 9.5 million annotated data points
-
Extremely low false alarm rate
❗ Key advantage
ZOE became the first ISO-certified system capable of detecting both adults and children, even though child detection is not a mandatory requirement under the standard.
🚢 Industry impact
The certification is expected to accelerate adoption across the cruise industry and help operators comply with the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act (CVSSA).
Industry experts note that cruise operators have long awaited a reliable certified MOB detection system, and Lloyd’s Register approval positions ZOE as a potential industry benchmark.
💡 Conclusion
ZOE demonstrates that AI-driven technology is ready to transform maritime safety, improving response time and reducing risks in man overboard situations.
