Seven people were rescued after a fishing vessel collided with a smaller recreational fishing boat in the Korea Strait early on August 23, causing the smaller vessel to capsize.
The accident occurred approximately 0.2 nautical miles north of Jukdo Island near Hansan-myeon in South Korea’s South Gyeongsang Province.
According to initial reports, a 30-ton fishing vessel was heading toward its fishing grounds when it collided with a 3-ton recreational fishing boat.
The impact caused the smaller vessel to overturn, throwing all seven people onboard into the sea.
Fortunately, rescuers were able to recover everyone from the water.
One person was reportedly found unconscious and was transported ashore to receive medical treatment.
The remaining six people suffered minor injuries.
No fatalities were reported.
The names of the vessels involved in the collision have not been publicly disclosed.
The incident occurred in waters frequently used by both commercial fishing vessels and smaller recreational craft, where differences in vessel size, speed and maneuverability can increase the consequences of a collision.
The South Korean Coast Guard has launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
Investigators are expected to examine the vessels’ courses before the collision, navigation procedures, visibility conditions and whether appropriate lookout and collision-avoidance measures were being followed.
Authorities may also review vessel communications and other available navigation data as part of the investigation.
Despite the recreational fishing boat capsizing immediately after the collision, the successful rescue of all seven people prevented the accident from becoming a major maritime tragedy.
The condition of the person who was found unconscious has not yet been publicly detailed, while the investigation into the cause of the collision continues.
