Electric ferry Candela Nova returns to public transport in Stockholm
On April 15, the world's first passenger electric hydrofoil ferry, Candela P-12 Nova, will start operating again in the capital of Sweden. The vessel is returning to the route after the end of the ice season, the manufacturer's press service reports
The Nova ferry was launched in the fall of 2024 and has already proven its effectiveness: during the last navigation, passenger traffic on the route between Eckerö and Stockholm City Hall increased by 30%. The journey time is only 30 minutes, which is significantly faster than traveling by car or bus (about an hour) and faster than other ferries on the route (45-55 minutes)
Last season, Nova made 120 trips and carried 2,326 passengers. From May 2025, the ferry will start operating daily. The vessel's speed reaches 25 knots, making it the fastest electric ferry in the world. It even surpasses the archipelago's diesel ships in speed. According to Candela, Nova emits 95% less CO₂ and consumes 84% less energy per passenger compared to the traditional ferries Lux and Sunnan
According to Candela founder and CEO Gustav Hasselskog, the third generation of hydrofoils proves that innovative technology is ready for everyday use in urban transport:
“We are expanding production to meet growing demand and make water transport sustainable and efficient
