Sunken Superyacht Bayesian Raised 10 Months After Tragedy off Sicilian Coast

On Friday, June 20, salvage teams successfully raised the sunken superyacht Bayesian, owned by British tech magnate Mike Lynch. The vessel was brought to the surface ten months after it sank off the coast of Sicily, claiming the lives of Lynch, his 17-year-old daughter, and five others.

The final phase of the operation took place on Saturday, June 21, under the direction of TMC Marine, which has been leading the salvage efforts. “Accelerated progress in the recovery operation off northern Sicily means all preparations are now close to completion ahead of the delicate lifting procedure,” the company said in a statement.

The operation had previously been paused following the death of a diver involved in the effort.

The 56-meter (184-foot) yacht sank in August last year while moored in the small port of Porticello, near Palermo, during a sudden storm. According to a preliminary British investigation released last month, the sinking was caused by stability issues. The vessel was vulnerable to high winds and likely capsized in gusts exceeding 117 km/h (73 mph).

The lifting process became easier after the yacht’s 72-meter mast was detached using a remotely operated cutting tool and laid on the seabed on Tuesday.

The yacht’s hull was hoisted using a custom steel cable rig, which was in turn connected to a floating lifting system positioned between two barges provided by Dutch salvage specialist Hebo Maritimeservice.

Salvage experts reinforced the cables as the yacht grew heavier when lifted from the water, according to a source in the Italian Coast Guard.

The vessel is expected to be transported to the nearby port of Termini Imerese on Monday, June 23, where it will be handed over to authorities investigating the tragedy.

Those who perished include Lynch’s daughter Hannah, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and chef Recaldo Thomas. Nine crew members and six guests were rescued.
