The Port of Vancouver has reached a significant milestone by completing its first-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation for a cruise ship. The operation was carried out by the bunkering vessel Seaspan Garibaldi, which fueled the Silver Nova from Silversea Cruises as it prepared for a voyage to Alaska.
The Vancouver Port Authority played a critical role in accrediting Seaspan Energy for such operations in 2024, ensuring high safety standards and thorough risk assessments. Today, Seaspan Energy operates three LNG bunkering vessels for ship-to-ship transfers along the west coast of North America.
While biofuels have long been available at the port, this first LNG bunkering marks a significant step toward using cleaner alternatives to traditional marine fuels like diesel. This historic moment could pave the way for other innovative fuel solutions, including methanol and ammonia, in the future.
