An oil spill from MSC Renaissance III temporarily disrupted shipping operations at the Port of Antwerp on 14 September.
The pollution was detected at approximately 15:00 local time while the vessel was berthed at quay 1718 of the MPET terminal. Oil entered the water between the ship and the shore in the Deurganck Dock area.
The incident partially suspended vessel traffic in the dock. Ships operating on the left bank were redirected through the Kallo Lock instead of the Kieldrecht Lock whenever possible.
An emergency response operation was launched immediately to contain the pollution and prevent it from spreading. The work included sealing the damaged section of the vessel, containing the oil leak and cleaning the affected area.
Vessel traffic resumed the following day, after the cleanup operation had been completed. The damaged section of the hull was temporarily sealed pending permanent repairs.
MSC Renaissance III was built in 2006 and measures 222.54 metres in length and 32.26 metres in width.
No information about injuries was reported in connection with the incident. The total volume of oil released into the water has not been disclosed.
