Container carrier MSC has announced an Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS) for all cargo moving from the Mediterranean and the Black Sea to the Red Sea, East Africa, and the Indian Subcontinent. The surcharge will apply from 16 March 2026 (based on Bill of Lading date) and will remain in effect until 31 March 2026.
The measure covers departures from West Mediterranean ports, the Adriatic, the East Mediterranean, as well as shipments originating from or transiting Greece, Türkiye, and the Black Sea area. MSC said the EFS is charged per TEU, with separate rates for dry and reefer containers.
Indicative EFS levels (USD/TEU) include:
-
From West Med/Adriatic: $60–$135 (dry) and $90–$200 (reefer) depending on destination (Red Sea / East Africa / Indian Subcontinent).
-
From East Med/Black Sea: $70–$155 (dry) and $100–$230 (reefer) depending on destination.
MSC linked the surcharge to higher fuel-related costs and broader operational disruptions affecting the market.
