The container ship GFS Galaxy sustained serious damage and caught fire off the coast of Oman while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. Following the outbreak of the fire, the vessel lost propulsion and was unable to continue its voyage.
According to available information, a major fire broke out in the engine room. The crew was forced to abandon the vessel using a lifeboat. Most of the seafarers were rescued safely, while search and rescue operations continued after reports of one missing crew member.
The vessel was sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping corridor that handles a significant share of the world’s oil, gas, and container cargo. Any incident in this region has a direct impact on maritime security and attracts close attention from shipowners, insurers, and maritime authorities worldwide.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The event serves as another reminder of the growing risks facing commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, where security concerns have increased significantly in recent days.
