🚢🇨🇾 Cyprus to Prioritize Shipping in the EU Agenda in 2026
Beginning January 2026, Cyprus will take over the presidency of the European Council for six months, making shipping and the maritime sector one of the central focuses of its term.
President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that support for maritime affairs is a national mission for Cyprus and a strategic priority for Europe.
The country’s agenda aims to enhance the competitiveness of the European fleet, support shipowners, and strengthen Europe’s maritime security and defense capabilities.
⚓ Key Priorities for Cyprus
📌 1. Developing EU Maritime Transport on the Global Stage
Cyprus plans to promote European shipping globally, bolstering its competitiveness against major players such as the U.S. and China.
📌 2. Maritime Education and Seafarer Training
Special emphasis will be placed on education, retraining programs, and encouraging more women to join the maritime profession.
📌 3. Digitalization and Decarbonization of the Fleet
The EU will continue implementing digital tools, emissions monitoring systems, and smart technologies to improve fleet efficiency and sustainability.
📌 4. Supporting the Transition to Green Technologies
Cyprus will advocate for stronger EU support for shipowners transitioning to alternative fuels such as methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen.
🌍 The EU “Competitiveness Compass”
The EU has already launched the “Competitiveness Compass” — a strategic roadmap aimed at reducing Europe’s technological gap with other leading maritime nations and accelerating the industry’s green transformation.
Additionally, a new program for alternative marine fuels is under development to secure Europe’s long-term leadership in sustainable shipping.
💬 Joint Vision of Cyprus and the EU
Both the European Union and Cyprus have declared that their shared goal is to create a level playing field in global shipping and to strengthen the European fleet’s position as a reliable and environmentally responsible partner in world trade.
