HD Hyundai has become the first shipbuilding company in the world to build and deliver 5,000 vessels, reaching this historic milestone just over half a century after handing over its very first ship in 1974.
The 5,000th vessel is the Diego Silang, the second offshore patrol vessel constructed for the Philippine Navy.
HD Hyundai’s journey began with the delivery of its first vessel, the VLCC Atlantic Baron, a 260,000 dwt crude oil tanker, in 1974. Since then, the company has delivered ships to more than 700 shipowners in 68 countries.
Broken down by yard, the contributions within the HD Hyundai group are as follows:
-
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries – 2,631 vessels delivered
-
HD Hyundai Mipo – 1,570 vessels
-
HD Hyundai Samho – 799 vessels
According to the company’s own calculation, if the average length of a vessel is taken as 250 metres, the combined length of all ships built by HD Hyundai is more than 140 times the height of Mount Everest – a vivid illustration of the group’s global scale.
HD Hyundai Chairman Kisun Chung commented:
“Our milestone of 5,000 vessels embodies the pride of Korea’s shipbuilding industry and the history of bold challenges that have helped reshape the global maritime paradigm.”
