The Gabon-flagged cargo vessel MSCI 1 was forced to carry out an emergency grounding off the coast of Badoc, Philippines, after encountering severe weather conditions.
The incident occurred on June 8, while the vessel was transporting gravel to Calayan Island. According to preliminary reports, seawater entered the ballast tanks, causing the ship to develop a dangerous list.
To prevent the vessel from sinking, the crew made the decision to intentionally run the ship aground in the coastal waters near Badoc. The Philippine Coast Guard received the distress report at approximately 6:20 a.m. local time.
A rescue operation involving the Philippine Coast Guard, the Philippine National Police, and local responders was immediately launched. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of all agencies, all 15 crew members were safely brought ashore, with no injuries reported.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the condition of the vessel and are coordinating salvage operations to refloat the ship. Experts are also assessing possible hull damage and any potential environmental impact.
Interestingly, a controlled grounding is considered one of the last emergency measures available to a ship’s master. In critical situations, deliberately beaching a vessel can help save lives and prevent the total loss of the ship.
