Cargo Vessel Hein Grounds off Trinidad Due to Severe List — Oil Spill Reported
On June 11, 2025, the 62-meter cargo ship Hein (IMO: 6702284) ran aground in the Gulf of Paria, off the Chaguaramas Peninsula, near Monos Island (Trinidad and Tobago).
The vessel was en route to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines carrying a load of bricks when a cargo shift caused a significant port side list. In response, the crew altered course and intentionally grounded the ship to prevent capsizing. No injuries were reported.
According to local authorities, the vessel’s port side is partially submerged, and an oil sheen has been observed around the ship. Emergency teams are currently working to stabilize the vessel and prepare for salvage operations.
A local environmental advocacy group has called for urgent action to prevent ecological damage and protect marine life in the area.
