Fincantieri has launched the new cruise ship Oceania Sonata at its Marghera shipyard in Italy, marking the start of a new five-vessel series for Oceania Cruises.
The vessel is the first ship in the new Sonata class and is scheduled for delivery to the cruise line in 2027.
Oceania Sonata has a gross tonnage of approximately 86,000 GT and will be able to accommodate around 1,390 passengers.
The launch represents an important milestone in Oceania Cruises’ fleet expansion program and continues the company’s long-standing cooperation with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.
The Sonata-class program currently includes five cruise ships.
Following Oceania Sonata, the second vessel, Oceania Arietta, is planned to enter service in 2029.
Three additional ships are scheduled for delivery in 2032, 2035 and 2037, creating a long-term construction pipeline extending well into the next decade.
The new Sonata class will continue the development path established by Oceania Cruises’ Allura-class vessels.
Fincantieri previously built Oceania Vista and Oceania Allura at its Sestri Ponente shipyard.
Oceania Vista was delivered in 2023, while Oceania Allura joined the fleet in 2025.
The Sonata series is expected to build on the design philosophy of these vessels while introducing a larger platform and a new generation of onboard spaces and passenger facilities.
At around 86,000 GT and with capacity for 1,390 guests, Oceania Sonata will remain relatively small compared with many of the largest modern cruise ships.
This reflects Oceania Cruises’ focus on a more premium and destination-oriented cruise product rather than extremely high passenger capacity.
The ship is being built at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard, one of Italy’s most important cruise ship construction facilities.
According to Fincantieri, the yard has delivered 36 cruise ships since 1991.
In recent years, the Marghera facility has undergone additional investment in automation, digitalization and modernization of production processes.
These improvements are intended to increase efficiency and support the construction of increasingly complex cruise vessels.
The launch of Oceania Sonata also highlights the continuing strength of Italy’s cruise shipbuilding sector, where Fincantieri remains one of the world’s leading builders of passenger vessels.
With deliveries scheduled through 2037, the Sonata program gives the shipyard and Oceania Cruises a long-term construction partnership covering more than a decade.
Oceania Sonata will now move into the next stage of outfitting and systems installation before beginning sea trials and final preparations for delivery.
Once completed in 2027, Oceania Sonata will become the first vessel of a new generation for Oceania Cruises and the foundation of a five-ship class that will expand the company’s fleet through the 2030s.
