Drone Attack Sets Two Gas Vessels Ablaze at Egypt’s Damietta Port

Egyptian authorities have officially confirmed that a drone attack caused the fire that broke out aboard two gas vessels at Damietta Port on the country’s Mediterranean coast. The announcement marks the first official confirmation that the incident was the result of a deliberate attack rather than an accident.

According to Egyptian officials and maritime security sources, the drone struck the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Energos Winter, a U.S.-owned LNG storage vessel. The resulting fire spread to the nearby LNG carrier Gaslog Salem, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Firefighting teams quickly brought the blaze under control, and all crew members were safely evacuated. Egyptian authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities occurred during the incident, and there were no reports of a gas leak or significant environmental damage.

The Energos Winter has a storage capacity of approximately 138,250 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and plays an important role in Egypt’s energy infrastructure. Technical inspections are now underway to assess the damage to both vessels before operations can resume.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Egyptian authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing while additional security measures are being implemented to protect the country’s ports and critical energy infrastructure.

The incident has heightened concerns over maritime security in the Eastern Mediterranean and highlights the growing risks faced by commercial shipping and energy infrastructure amid escalating tensions across the Middle East.
