The construction of an ice-class research vessel for Denmark will begin in April this year. This was reported by the press service of the Danish Polytechnic University (Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, DTU), which is the customer of the project
The contract for construction was signed with the Spanish shipbuilding company Construcciones Navales P. Freire, which has experience in creating complex technological vessels. Four shipyards participated in the tender, and the winner was a Danish consortium including Knud E. Hansen, Naval Architects and Odense Maritime Technology, which developed the design of the vessel. The new vessel, named Dana V, will be available to all research organizations in Denmark
According to the terms of the contract, the vessel is scheduled to be handed over to the customer in the fall of 2027. Dana V will be 70 meters long, have a displacement of 2,545 tons and accommodate 38 people. The vessel is designed for scientific expeditions in the Arctic and long-distance sea voyages. Its power plant will be able to operate on both biodiesel fuel and batteries.
