A general cargo vessel suffered a catastrophic structural failure after breaking in two while anchored inside a protected breakwater during severe weather. The incident was recently highlighted in a MARS (Mariners’ Alerting and Reporting Scheme) report published by The Nautical Institute.
According to the report, the vessel initially sought shelter behind a breakwater as the storm intensified. However, a significant change in wind and wave direction exposed the ship to heavy beam seas. Instead of being protected, the vessel began experiencing extreme hull stresses caused by continuous rolling and wave impact.
The crew requested tug assistance, but deteriorating weather conditions made the operation impossible. As the storm continued, structural loads exceeded the strength of the hull, causing the vessel to fracture into two sections while still at anchor. Fortunately, all 13 crew members were successfully rescued.
The Nautical Institute notes that even when anchored in seemingly protected waters, rapidly changing weather conditions can dramatically alter wave direction and significantly increase structural stress on a vessel. The incident serves as an important reminder that continuous weather monitoring and timely decision-making remain essential for safe ship operations.
