On June 20, 2025, the official launch of the new fully electric ferry Nerthus, equipped with advanced iC7-Marine drives from Danfoss Drives, took place in Denmark. Key partners and guests attended the ceremony, including Danfoss Honorary Chairman Jørgen Mads Clausen.
The Nerthus ferry operates solely on battery electric power under normal conditions and features a backup biofuel generator for added reliability. This makes it technologically more advanced compared to the ferry Ellen — previously the world’s longest-range fully electric ferry.
Danfoss’s iC7 solutions are specifically tailored for marine applications, delivering high energy efficiency, performance, and precise customization to the vessel’s needs. The infrastructure also includes shore charging systems and support for hybrid energy storage through the iC7-Hybrid platform, making it a versatile solution for electric shipping.
The project is operated by Molslinjen, Denmark’s largest ferry company. The launch of Nerthus marks a significant milestone in the development of sustainable maritime transport.
