Portuguese authorities have intercepted a semi-submerged submarine carrying around 6.5 tonnes of cocaine off the Azores. The operation was carried out with the support of the Portuguese navy and air force, as well as partners from the UK, Spain and the US
The vessel, manned by five crew members, was heading towards the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal remains one of the main routes for drug smuggling to Europe, most of which comes by sea from Latin America.
