The LPG tanker Gas Lisbon caught fire following a powerful explosion in the Black Sea near the Romanian coast. The vessel was sailing from Alexandria, Egypt, to the Ukrainian port of Reni in the Odesa region when the incident occurred. According to Romanian authorities, all 17 crew members were safely evacuated, while three seafarers sustained injuries during the emergency.
The tanker was carrying approximately 3,790 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (propane). Following the explosion, a major fire broke out on board and continued burning for several hours. Romanian coast guard vessels, firefighting teams and rescue services were immediately deployed to assist the crew and contain the situation.
The exact cause of the explosion has not yet been officially confirmed. Romanian authorities stated that the incident occurred outside the country’s territorial waters. Several media outlets, citing maritime and government sources, reported that the tanker may have been struck by a naval drone, although this information remains unconfirmed while the investigation is ongoing.
The incident once again highlights the growing security risks for commercial shipping in the northwestern Black Sea. The route leading to the Ukrainian Danube ports of Reni and Izmail remains strategically important for grain exports, fuel transportation and international trade. Any disruption in this region creates additional challenges for shipping companies and the safety of their crews.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion while damage assessments are underway. Once the fire has been fully extinguished, experts will inspect the vessel to determine the cause of the incident and evaluate whether the tanker can safely return to service.
