22 December 2025 53

The German-flagged cargo vessel Cellus ran aground near the entrance to the Port of Sunderland on the morning of 19 December. No injuries were reported and there was no indication of environmental pollution.

The ship, which was sailing from Karlshamn carrying paper products, grounded shortly after passing the port’s berths. Tug assistance was dispatched from the Rivers Tees and Tyne to help refloat the vessel.

Following the operation, Cellus was successfully refloated and later secured alongside at Greenwells Quay in Sunderland.

Cellus was built in 1998 and measures 99.98 m in length with a 17 m beam.
