Maritime Routes in the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea Under Threat Amid Middle East Escalation

Following Israel’s recent strikes on Iranian targets, the multinational naval forces led by the United States have stated that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and commercial shipping continues. However, rising concerns are prompting some shipowners to avoid the increasingly volatile region.

Iran has previously threatened to close the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz — a key passage for global oil trade — in response to Western pressure. Any disruption to this corridor could severely impact global energy supply and the broader economy.

According to documents reviewed by Reuters, the governments of Greece and the United Kingdom have advised commercial vessels to avoid sailing through the Gulf of Aden and to report all transits through the Strait of Hormuz. Greek shipowners have been instructed to submit details of vessel movements in the area to the country’s Ministry of Shipping.

Jakob Larsen, head of maritime safety and security at shipping association BIMCO, noted that a growing number of vessels are now exercising extreme caution and steering clear of both the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. He warned that any perceived U.S. involvement in attacks could significantly raise the risk of escalation, including potential missile strikes or the deployment of sea mines in the strait.

INTERTANKO, the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners, emphasized the irreplaceable importance of the Strait of Hormuz for global tanker traffic, stating that any threat to the free flow of ships could have serious repercussions for the world economy.

Israel has confirmed that its strikes targeted nuclear facilities, ballistic missile production sites, and military commanders, as part of an ongoing effort to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons — a claim Iran continues to deny.

The UK government has advised all vessels under its flag — including those registered in Gibraltar, Bermuda, and the Isle of Man — to avoid the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Ships transiting the region are urged to implement the highest levels of security and minimize crew presence on deck while underway.

The EU naval mission “Aspides,” operating in the Red Sea, continues to carry out its duties as normal but is closely monitoring developments in the region.
