A tragic incident occurred on November 7 in the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Johor, Malaysia, when a fire broke out on board the Maltese-flagged container ship Kyparissia while it was berthed at Berth 118 for unloading operations.

According to local authorities, three crew members lost their lives, and three others sustained injuries of varying severity. The victims were identified as nationals of Malaysia, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom. The injured seafarers were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The fire reportedly started around 12:23 p.m. local time in the underdeck section of Block No. 5. The Johor Fire and Rescue Department quickly responded, deploying nine personnel, a rescue boat, and a support vehicle to combat the blaze. Two tugboats also assisted in firefighting operations from the waterside.

The fire was brought under control thanks to the coordinated efforts of the emergency teams. An on-site command post was established to manage the situation, and firefighting and cooling operations continued with support from PTP port staff.

The Kyparissia was built in 2014 and sails under the flag of Malta. The vessel measures 255.34 meters in length and 37.41 meters in breadth, representing a modern mid-size container ship serving routes across the Asia-Pacific region.
