Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has named Fujin Sailor, described as the world’s first LNG carrier equipped with a wind-assisted propulsion system.
The naming ceremony was held at the Hanwha Ocean shipyard in Geoje, South Korea. The membrane-type LNG carrier is also the first vessel to be fitted with two Wind Challenger units.
Delivery of Fujin Sailor is scheduled for the end of September 2026. The vessel will operate under a long-term charter contract with Chevron Corporation.
Fujin Sailor measures 294.9 metres in length and 46.4 metres in width, with an LNG carrying capacity of 174,000 cubic metres.
The vessel is powered by a low-speed, low-pressure ME-GA dual-fuel main engine capable of operating on LNG. It is also equipped with an air lubrication system and a shaft generator to further improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.
Fujin Sailor is the fourth of 11 vessels in the MOL Group fleet already equipped or scheduled to be equipped with the Wind Challenger system.
MOL plans to increase the number of ships using the technology to 25 vessels by 2030 and 80 vessels by 2035 as part of its strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
