Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore for its project of a service operation vessel (SOV) powered entirely by liquid hydrogen — a major milestone in realizing one of the most ambitious green innovations in the maritime sector.
This new SOV is designed to operate with zero emissions 95% of the time, cutting annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 4,000 tons. It can accommodate up to 90 technicians and offers 14 days of autonomous endurance at sea, significantly reducing the need for additional offshore infrastructure.
Rapid hydrogen refueling is another key feature: bunkering can be completed in just six hours using trailers, eliminating the requirement for heavy port installations.
This project is part of LDA’s broader strategy to develop clean-energy vessels, including methanol dual-fuel and fully electric alternatives. The AiP from Bureau Veritas validates the feasibility of hydrogen-powered marine operations and underscores LDA’s commitment to sustainable solutions for offshore wind support.
