Hanwha Ocean held a naming ceremony for its first high-end drillship Tidal Action, marking its official entry into the deepwater drilling market
Tidal Action is built with Hanwha Ocean’s proprietary technology and boasts impressive performance: drilling to depths of up to 12 kilometers with a maximum water depth of 3.6 kilometers. The vessel is equipped with a dynamic positioning system and is also ready to install blowout preventers with pressures up to 20,000 psi, significantly improving safety and operational reliability
The delivery of the vessel comes with the establishment of a new entity, Hanwha Drilling, a subsidiary that will manage the drillship fleet. This move reflects Hanwha Ocean’s strategy to independently control key assets and expand its presence in the offshore energy sector
The company also plans to develop an integrated EPCIO (engineering, procurement, construction, installation and operation) model, positioning itself as a turnkey solution provider in the marine sector. Hanwha Ocean focuses on environmental friendliness, technological excellence and independence in asset management
Tidal Action has already become part of a long-term project: in September last year, Brazilian company Constellation signed a $1 billion contract with Petrobras for two drillships, one of which is Tidal Action. Drilling operations in Brazil are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025
“The delivery of a world-class drillship is an important milestone in our strategy. “We intend to become a leader in the offshore energy industry, based on technology and a clear strategic vision,” said Philippe Levy, President of Hanwha Ocean’s Offshore Division.
