Cargo ship Khatulistiwa 8, carrying 1,850 tonnes of cement, sank after a collision with a barge off the coast of Tuban, East Java, Indonesia.
The accident occurred on the evening of October 7, approximately nine nautical miles from the PT Semen Indonesia special terminal in Tuban.
Following the collision, the vessel sustained damage and suffered a complete electrical blackout, before beginning to sink.
There were 18 crew members aboard Khatulistiwa 8. Seventeen seafarers were rescued, while one remains missing.
The missing crew member has been identified as 29-year-old Chief Officer Mayan Petter Saba. A joint search and rescue operation is continuing in the area.
Sixteen crew members were rescued by the tug TB Amazon Harbour, while another seafarer was picked up by a nearby fishing boat.
All rescued crew members were brought back to the port of Tuban at around 01:30.
Khatulistiwa 8 departed port at approximately 17:30 and was bound for Sampit, Central Kalimantan, carrying 1,850 tonnes of Semen Gresik cement.
At around 22:00, the vessel collided with a barge whose identity had not yet been established at the time of reporting.
Search and rescue teams continue to look for the missing Chief Officer near the sinking site. The cause and circumstances of the collision are under investigation.
