The Chinese-flagged cargo vessel Hua De 858 broke apart after running aground in Xinghua Bay, off the coast of Fuzhou, on December 3. The grounding occurred at about 22:45 local time, when the ship struck shallow waters between Xiaori Island and Dasheyu Island. Shortly after the impact, the hull suffered severe damage and the vessel split into two sections.
Despite the extensive structural damage, none of the 12 crew members were injured. Rescue teams responded quickly and successfully evacuated everyone from the ship. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the grounding and the subsequent hull failure.
Hua De 858 is a cargo ship built in 2008, measuring 95 meters in length and 16 meters in beam, with a deadweight of 5,035 tons. According to MarineTraffic, the vessel departed Caofeidian on November 28 and was scheduled to arrive in Haikou on December 6.
