Environmental groups have filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump and his administration for lifting a ban on future oil and gas leases.
The crux of the dispute is that Trump reversed decisions by Barack Obama and Joe Biden that protected millions of square miles of offshore territory from drilling. Environmentalists argue that the president has no authority to lift such restrictions because the 1953 law only allows for them to be imposed, not lifted.
A court ruled that Trump's attempt to do so in 2017 was illegal. Now environmentalists are calling for that decision to be reinstated and for Trump to block further action.
The Trump administration faces dozens of lawsuits, including challenges to environmental and immigration measures.
