Two passenger ferries collided near the Mexican island of Cozumel early on 21 September. The 48-metre Ultramar 1 struck the moored ferry Xel Ha while approaching the terminal.
According to preliminary information, Ultramar 1, which has the identification number MMSI 345110022, made contact with the port quarter of Xel Ha. The second ferry is 47 metres long and registered under IMO 9890070.
Both vessels reportedly sustained only minor damage. No injuries among passengers or crew members were reported. There were also no reports of pollution or disruption to other vessel traffic in the port area.
Mexican maritime authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Investigators will examine the cause of the collision and determine whether the required manoeuvring procedures were followed as Ultramar 1 approached the terminal.
The incident is particularly notable because it was reportedly the second collision involving Ultramar 1 and Xel Ha in less than a month. Details of the earlier accident and any possible connection between the two incidents have not yet been disclosed.
