Global logistics company DSV is preparing to launch a commercial cargo delivery service to offshore energy installations using autonomous aircraft.
The project will be developed in partnership with American autonomous aircraft manufacturer Skyways. Initial operations are expected to begin this autumn from Norden in northern Germany, supporting energy facilities in the North Sea.
The new service will transport time-critical equipment, spare parts and other high-value cargo directly from shore-based logistics centres to offshore wind turbines and energy platforms.
Autonomous aircraft could provide an alternative to vessels and helicopters when transporting smaller cargo loads. Their use could reduce delivery times, lower operating costs and decrease the number of support vessel journeys required.
Under the agreement, Skyways will provide the autonomous aircraft, pilot training, technical maintenance and regulatory support. DSV will supply local flight personnel and work with aviation authorities to secure the approvals required for commercial operations.
The aircraft model selected for the first deployments has not yet been announced. The production-ready Skyways V2 can carry approximately 13.6 kg of cargo, has a maximum range of around 720 km and can remain airborne for approximately eight hours.
Skyways is also developing the larger V3 B2, designed to carry loads of up to 45 kg. Its targeted range exceeds 1,600 km, with an endurance of approximately 20 hours.
The project is expected to move autonomous offshore drone logistics beyond individual trials and towards a regular commercial service. The agreement also provides an opportunity to supply additional aircraft and expand operations into other markets, subject to regulatory approval.
Offshore wind is increasingly becoming a testing ground for autonomous aviation technology. Drones are being considered not only for cargo transport but also for turbine blade inspections, equipment monitoring and operations from service vessels.
