Swiss offshore construction and decommissioning specialist Allseas has won a contract from the UK unit of TAQA to dismantle the Brae Alpha oil and gas platform in the central North Sea.
Project scope
The decommissioning works will cover:
-
topsides weighing 33,000 tonnes,
-
a steel jacket structure weighing 13,000 tonnes,
-
and 34 conductors.
Operations are scheduled to take place between 2028 and 2032.
Technology and execution
The world’s largest offshore construction vessel, Pioneering Spirit, will be deployed for the heavy lift operations, supported by the construction vessel Oceanic.
Allseas has committed to ensuring that at least 95% of recovered materials are reused or recycled, underlining its focus on sustainability.
Historical significance of Brae Alpha
Located 270 km northeast of Aberdeen, the Brae Alpha platform has been a cornerstone of the UK’s offshore energy sector since production began in 1983.
Allseas’ North Sea track record
This latest agreement follows a 2022 contract with TAQA, under which Allseas is responsible for the decommissioning of the Eider Alpha, Tern Alpha, North Cormorant, and Cormorant Alpha platforms.
