A fire broke out on the morning of May 8 aboard the ferry Tom Sawyer operated by TT-Line while the vessel was berthed in the port of Rostock, Germany. One person was injured in the incident.
According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred during maintenance works when a contractor opened a fuel tank, causing oil to leak into the shaft and nearby machinery spaces. Heat generated by internal equipment ignited the oil, resulting in a fire. One worker suffered injuries caused by hot oil.
Approximately 50 firefighters from Rostock were dispatched to the scene and managed to fully extinguish the fire after several hours. No environmental damage or pollution has been reported.
Following the incident, German authorities prohibited the vessel from leaving port. The ferry is currently out of service and undergoing repairs before returning to regular operations.
Local media also reported that no major internal oil spill was detected inside the vessel.
The Tom Sawyer is a Cyprus-flagged Ro-Ro passenger ferry built in 1989. The vessel is 177 meters long, 26 meters wide, and has a gross tonnage of 26,478 GT.
