Belgium Introduces First Shore Power Facility for Ro-Ro Ships
The Port of Zeebrugge has taken a major step toward greener shipping by launching Belgium’s first shore power system dedicated to Ro-Ro vessels.
The new infrastructure allows ships to connect to the local electrical grid while berthed, enabling them to switch off their auxiliary diesel generators during port stays. This significantly reduces carbon emissions, air pollution, and noise levels in the port area.
Designed specifically for Ro-Ro vessels, which transport cars, trucks, trailers, and other wheeled cargo, the system ensures that onboard equipment and services can continue operating without consuming fuel while alongside.
The project forms part of a broader effort to decarbonize the maritime sector and supports the European Union’s environmental objectives. Similar technologies are already being adopted by major ports across Europe, and the launch in Zeebrugge further strengthens Belgium’s commitment to sustainable maritime transport.
Shore power is increasingly seen as one of the most effective solutions for reducing the environmental impact of shipping. As international regulations become stricter, more ports worldwide are expected to invest in similar technologies.
The introduction of shore-side electricity marks another important milestone on the path toward cleaner, quieter, and more energy-efficient shipping.
